Optic neuritis is one of the major diseases in the neuro-ophthalmology field. The majority of our
knowledge associated with optic neuritis was obtained from the Optic Neuritis Treatment Trial.
However, the significance of optic neuritis is not confined to the disease itself. Because development
of optic neuritis means that we should consider another systemic disease such as multiple sclerosis
(MS) or neuromyelitisoptica (NMO). If MS or NMO progress, the patients could have serious
deterioration of vision. Therefore, we have to monitor their vision continuously. Another meaning of
the ophthalmic examination in MS or NMO is that through the optic nerve and retina we can monitor
general status of the disease. The more accurate decision of that was started with huge work of
optical coherence tomography.
